Geography [GRY]


The Geography Department's  Bachelor's program prepares students for graduate school, international studies, international commerce and community planning-related activities.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss and apply the themes of geography, such as place, location, region, movement, or human-environment interaction.
  2. ​Gather relevant information, evaluate it critically, and communicate it effectively.
  3. Identify geographic problems, investigate those problems, and hypothesize solutions.
  4. Apply appropriate geographic theory, analytical methods, or graphical tools to spatial problems.

Program Standard Grade Point Average 

The major GPA is calculated by all courses identified in the college catalog as required for the major. In addition, this program has an established program standard GPA which may be used to determine progress in the program.

  • Program Standard GPA
    • Minimum GPA of 2.0 in CAP 327, 328; any GRY course
  • Geography Major Requirements
    • 34 credits in CAP 327, 328; any GRY course

Bachelor's Degree Requirements


All relevant degree requirements  must be completed, in addition to the major requirements listed below.

B. Upper Division Elective Courses in Geography: 18 credit hours


Select 18 credit hours of GRY courses at the 300 or 400 level.

Total Credit Hours in Geography: 33


C. Other Elective Course Work: 38-48 credit hours


Must include at least 21 upper division credit hours.

May include a minor of 15-21 credit hours.

D. Modern World Language: 0-12 credit hours


Proficiency in a modern world language through the intermediate level

E. General Education: 30-37 credit hours


General Education credits include SUNY and Cortland GE coursework
