Anthropology: Concentration in Forensic Anthropology [ANT_FANT]

The forensic anthropology concentration in the Sociology/Anthropology Department provides focused training in human skeletal anatomy as it applies to medico-legal contexts. Coursework emphasizes hands-on training in human osteology and forensic anthropological methods. The program includes opportunities for field-based learning activities and applied research opportunities in the Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology Laboratory (BAFL).

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational material in the sub-disciplines of Anthropology, including action anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. 
  2. Describe the methodologies used to conduct anthropological fieldwork in at least one sub-discipline. 
  3. Compare the major theoretical frameworks within anthropology using an historical perspective. 
  4. Develop a research question and/or hypothesis relevant to anthropological research. 
  5. Communicate anthropological knowledge clearly and effectively in writing. 
  6. Perform a forensic anthropological analysis of human remains.
  7. Demonstrate professional standards for ethical treatment of human remains.

Bachelor's Degree Requirements


All relevant degree requirements  must be completed, in addition to the major requirements listed below.

Total Credit Hours Required for Major: 39


Forensic Anthropology Concentration Courses: 15 credit hours


The following three courses are required for the concentration

Anthropology Electives: 12 credit hours


Students fulfill these credit hours by choosing four anthropology courses, three of which must be 300 level or above.
